TRAC Preseason Breakdown
« on: July 13, 2018, 10:58:04 AM »

Central - Returning valley champs.

Strengths - Best QB in the league. One of best offensive head coaches in the league. Lose leading WR, but have three big-time talents returning in Jeremiah Hunter, Tyrell Grayson, Manuel Oliver-Davis. Get Buchanan, Clovis, and Clovis West on the turf this year. The right culture surrounds Central Football for the first time in a long while. Coach Biggs has that machine in full force now.

Weaknesses - Offensive and defensive lines were at times pushed around last season. Could be an issue losing multiple starters to graduation. About 75% of the running game is gone--Javon Bigelow played like a man possessed last year and will be missed. Jacob Torrez was outstanding at WR last year, 1,300 yards, and that loss of production and leadership will create a void.

You have to consider Central the preseason favorite because they are the returning champs with an outstanding head coach and quarterback returning. I do not see the margin between 1 and 2 being very wide (if at all), though.

Buchanan - D1 runner up.

Strengths - Former head coach Mike Jacot helped change the culture of this program and Matt Giordano has continued to elevate it on the field and in the weight room. 2018 Bears are big, athletic and tough. Kendall Milton might end up being the most heralded player to come out of this section---rushed for 1,500 yards as a sophomore and is a load to bring down. Gained transfer Jalen Cropper from Sanger who is a WR, but is also able to carry the ball out of the backfield. Despite losing a few key players, defense should be a strength again as Bears return 7 on that side of the ball. Brock Jones is a weapon on both sides of the ball.

Weaknesses - Dominant offensive line from a year ago loses most to graduation. Toa Scanlan was dominant on the defensive line a year ago and he was the emotional leader on the team. Must replace. Though Milton is getting into his upperclassman years, Trevor Ervin was an exceptional second head to the two headed monster running game. QB questions surround the program until we see someone step up....candidates for 2018 appear to be more than capable however.

I think Central and Buchanan are in a tier of their own when it comes to TRAC football this year.

Clovis West - D1 Semifinalist

Strengths - Dante Chachere was really good for the Eagles last year. Saw everything as a QB and led a couple game winning drives throughout the season. Always a plus when returning one of the top QBs in the section. Cam Hicks is another high level athlete that will be counted on to lead on the field and in a leadership role this year. Lots of talent, started at outside linebacker last year.

Weaknesses - Have to understand, Eagles had a plethora of seniors last season. As a team Clovis West caught 276 passes last year for 3,462 yards----only 121 of those yards return. College football players like Rodney Wright and Ricardo Arias will be tough to replace. Defense has to replace DJ and Dusty Schramm at linebacker along with the entire secondary.

Clovis North - (2-9, 1-4 in TRAC a year ago)

Strengths - DJ Frampton should take grasp of the revolving QB position from a year ago. DJ got experience as a sophomore last year. Options return to run the ball between Towasin Akindele, Jackson Schultz, and Trey Patton. Innovative offensive coordinator will get offense going in right direction. Young players are a year older.

Weaknesses - Consistency hurt the Broncos last season along with overall star power.

Clovis - (7-5, 2-3 TRAC a year ago)

Strengths - Clovis returns two leading WRs from a year ago. Cougars will be better on the offensive and defensive lines than in 2017. Dorian Canjura, teams leading tackler, also back to lead the defense.

Weaknesses - Must break in a new QB and ramp up production in the running game. Cougars were a step slow last season and will need to find the horses to get back to competing for a league championship. Hunt brothers are gone (transferred to Edison). JV team appeared to have a rough season last year.

Clovis East (0-10, 0-5 in TRAC a year ago)

- Continuing to get better. Program is headed in right direction. Super sophomore class from a year ago (who won league as 8th graders) will now be juniors.

Feel free to chime in

Central and Buchanan will be a great game, only reason I'm thinking central wins that game is Trent Tompkins, Milton is amazing, but without the O-line back and a questionable passing game, central seems like right now, they have the edge in preseason. I'd like to see CE get its first league win in a long time! Could be the year
