John McMillen, Yosemite High School head varsity baseball coach, has resigned after coaching the Badgers for 10 years.

He said he is stepping down because he can't devote the time the players need and deserve from a head coach.

McMillen first joined the YHS baseball program in 2004 as head JV coach. He was named varsity co-head coach with George McWherter in 2006 and took over the head coaching job the following year.

McMillen, a 1984 YHS graduate, played on the Badger football team (defensive back, wide receiver) and was an all-league third baseman on the baseball team. He played in the '84 City-County All Star baseball game, where he got a three-run home run leading the county to a 13-7 victory. He was the first YHS athlete to play on three teams (football, basketball, and baseball) that went to the section playoffs.

He coached a number of players that went on to play college baseball including Jackson Glines, and Brad Rolff, and a number who played at the NAIA , and the community college level.

McMillen was also active with the Yosemite Baseball Boosters who have raised more than $200,000 over the past seven years for equipment and improvements to Badger baseball fields, and providing funds to Little League.

"It's hard to walk away from the game I love so much," McMillen said. "I really enjoyed the years of coaching at Yosemite and the wonderful, long-term relationships that were built with the players."

McMillen said the team has a great group of returning players this year and expects the Badgers to have a good season.

"John did an outstanding job for the YHS baseball program," said Steve Raupp, the now retired district superintendent. "He's another former YHS student/athlete who returned to the school to coach and give back to Yosemite."

Yosemite principal Randy Seals said the school will begin an extensive search for a new varsity baseball coach immediately.

"Baseball is a successful and proud program at YHS and we want to make sure we hire the best possible candidate to lead this program into the future," Seals said.

Some names that I think might surface for the opening:
George McWherter- A true Oakhurst legend.
Ted Lilly- Recently retired from MLB and ex Yosemite great!
Corey Miller- One of Ted's closest friends and standout at Yosemite in the 90's.
Paul Sotelo- travel ball pioneer and Coach Mcwherter's right hand man on some of the best travel teams of all time!

I would love to see McWherter back, but do you think he'd head "up the mountain" again?  I played for him for two summers and it was some of the most fun I've ever had wearing spikes!

Just heard this morning that former YHS football coach, Aaron Eames, is in the running for the position.  Believe he coached JV Baseball a few years back.

Was Bob the guy who used to coach the Rug Doctor summer team?  They were kind of like a B-team for George McWherter's Central Valley teams.
