I think that we should be able to voice our opinions about any topic good or bad without it getting locked. I don't know what happened with the Mendota coach and I hope it all works out for him but, its kind of hypocritical to be able to talk about the good and leave all the controversial topics. Just my opinion. :d:

You have to understand that legal ramifications can stem from slander on this board....RIGHT?....guess who's neck is sticking out....MINE....if you don't like the way MY BOARD is ran.....leave...plain and simple...YOU HAVE NO RIGHTS to dictate ANYTHING on this board.
Now....if you wanna cut me a sizable check to own this place....PM...we'll make arrangements to meet and transfer ownership..and you can have the burden of responsibility....until then..... I MAKE THE RULES....

The Communications Decency Act of 1996, 47 U.S.C § 230, grants providers of interactive computer services with legal immunity. Chances are that you would fall under this protection.

It amazes me that we still have to have this conversation every time a controversy occurs that involves Central Valley football.

Although you are right in that this site would probably fall under this, everyone else is right that defending that right would be an expensive proposition at best. Lawyers would be licking their chops. It is frustrating and one could make an argument that there is a TON of slandering on this forum, we have to be mindful when it involves criminal charges. Saying coaches/a school/refs sucks is one thing, speculating/leaking statements about a criminal matter is another. Unfortunately, BIGSKIN is wise to lock them. I don't want to lose this site....it's way too fun.

AND, I would be remiss if I didn't finish with......yeah, a lot of people have something to share about that situation, BUT SO! (sorry I had to)

Wow didn't mean to ruffle any feathers. I was just asking a question so thanks for the info. Now BIGSKIN I will happily leave your board, not because I don't like your board but, because I don't want to be disrespectful and talk to you like you did to me " If you don't like the way this board is ran leave". That comment was not needed at all, I wasn't disrespectful or anything so I wish you and your board nothing but the best.

Big Skin can do what he wants to do. He owns the keys to this site. You put yourself in his shoes. There is nothing disrespectful about his choice to lock that conversation up. Also if you were just asking a question than you are not disrespectful. You called him and those that run this site hypocritical because he doesn't want controversy stemmed from this site.

llabtoof, cut Big some slack.  He's from Chowchilla.

On the issue of Coach Mejia, he's a public figure and the whole world is talking about his arrest.  After the ESPN hype, all his business is on the street.  Everyone is speculating and everyone has an opinion.  But since he is a public figure, in order for anyone to have exposure for defamation, the statements would have to be malicious.

This is the law of the land:  "the First Amendment protects the publication of all statements, even false ones, about the conduct of public officials except when statements are made with actual malice (with knowledge that they are false or in reckless disregard of their truth or falsity)."

In the world of defamation, making or repeating a defamatory statement is considered publication, and publication gets you in trouble.  The Communications Decency Act has been interpreted to say that operators of Internet services are not to be construed as publishers (and thus not legally liable for the words of third parties who use their services).

So, that's all to say that the likelihood of Big Skin being found liable for publishing a defamatory statement about a public figure is pretty thin.  But that has nothing to do with him getting caught up in a legal battle he has to spend money extracting himself from because one of us leaves the reservation and says something stupid.
