most recent article going into spring. good luck cody...pullin for ya!

By Paul Buker, The Oregonian

Cody Kessler's most noteworthy play for USC came last season after the quarterback was told by coaches to wear a different jersey number on special teams in the first half against Colorado.

He was the backup to Max Wittek against Notre Dame and in the season-ending Sun Bowl loss to Georgia Tech, but he did not play.

So the third-year sophomore spent the last two months doing what he has always done since arriving at USC:

Preparing for his opportunity.

On Tuesday, in the first official practice of the post-Matt Barkley era, Kessler, fellow sophomore Max Wittek and freshman Max Browne began a competition that could extend into training camp.

"It's wide open," Kessler said afterward.

USC has not had a quarterback competition since 2009, when Barkley was a freshman.

There is no time frame for naming a No. 1, Coach Lane Kiffin said.

"We've got to find the right guy," he said, "and when we find that out, when it shows itself, then we'll decide."

Well.... Wittek went down with a MCL today... Should miss more than a week.... Here is Kessler's chance.... Of course if Browne gets the majority of the work. .... Then.......

scrimmage results 3/16/13 via ocregister.com

At the end of today’s practice at the Coliseum, USC had a 56-play scrimmage. It was designed so that the first-team offense would face the first-team defense, and the second-team offense would face the second team defense. The first-team offense scored one touchdown in six possessions (a 75-yard pass from Cody Kessler to Nelson Agholor) while the second-team offense also scored one touchdown in six possessions (a 2-yard run by Javorious Allen). Because of injuries, many players did not participate, but here are some unofficial stats...

PASSING: Cody Kessler (first team), 13 of 19, 161 yards, 1 TD, 0 INT; Max Browne (second team), 6-9, 69 yards, 0 TD, 0 INT.

My son told me tonight that Whitaker was named ahead of Cody?!  WTH?!!!  Guess eye candy is trumping field play at SC now?  Long time till the season starts but from everything I've seen and read Cody should be sitting at the top of the hill as of now.... Huh?

Who's Whitaker? Do you mean Wittek? It wouldn't be surprising to me. These people are blinded by physical tools only. Cody is not as big as Max. Supposedly doesn't have a stronger arm. Bigger body, stronger arm supposedly means pro prospect. People fall for a strong arm. Cody's not from Mater Dei, which is a lifeline into USC. He comes from a smaller area, not LA or even powerhouse high school from Washington. All the stereotypes apply here. Cody could throw 3-5 TD's and have 0 INT's. Effectively he could lead his team down the field, make some plays with his feet, and do the little things that win games. Wittek could throw 2 TD's and have 3 INT's. Those 2 TD's could be long bombs and Laine Kiffen would not care about the picks or anything else. He clearly falls in love with the long bomb. Remember how many long bombs play calls he called for Jamarcus Russell in Oakland? Bigger body, stronger arm does not necessarily mean better athlete or better QB that wins. My point all along is that there is more to a QB than the frame and arm.

That's not what Just A Fan is saying. I think he is referring to a depth chart. And given that Cody has separated himself after Wittek got hurt and still is 2nd on the depth chart is pretty glaring.

I sure hope Kessler gets a legit shot to start, from everything I have read he is the better of the 3 qbs battling. If he ends up the starter I may have to root for SC...at least while he is the QB.
