Thoughts.....

A football proposal is picking up steam among California Interscholastic Federation commissioners that would add eight State Bowl football games, reward all section champions and largely do away with the current handpicked system.

The proposal would place 48 section champions into regional championships to create 24 regional-title games from the North and South. As they do now, the commissioners would choose the top team from each region to advance directly to a state open division title game.

The 24 winners from the regional games then would meet the following week, giving California 13 state champions. The state bowl title games probably would be played at at least three sites on the same Friday and Saturday.

Currently, five state bowl titles games are played over two days in Carson (Los Angeles County).

The proposal has been in the works for months, said CIF Associate Executive Director Ron Nocetti. The commissioners will discuss the pros and cons of the plan in Ontario (San Bernardino County) on Oct. 27, and it could be put to a vote as early as Jan. 30-31 in San Jose.

If passed, it could be implemented as soon as 2015.

Why the proposed change?

"I think right now the commissioners are finding it harder and harder to leave deserving championship teams out of the regional championships," Nocetti said. "In other state championship sports, we have teams that make section finals and semifinals advancing to regional play. Many championship football teams don't even have that chance."

The regional-title games would be based on competitive equity, not enrollment, according to Nocetti. There also would be a second open division game based on enrollment of 1,250 and fewer.

The complaint Nocetti is hearing most is that this would water down state championships and make them less meaningful. "I don't think that's the case at all," he said. "I just see the best teams in the state getting to play each other."

The proposed divisions thus far are: Open Large, 1AA, 1A, 2AA, 2A, 3AA, 3A, 4AA, 4A, 5AA, 5A, 6AA and Open Small. By comparison, Texas has 10 state title games, Florida nine and New Jersey 24.

The proposal addresses at least a couple of complaints about the current system. Champions from the Central Section, which have been part of the South, would be moved to the North.

Also, sections would be allowed to send non-section championship teams from an open division into the regional playoffs. Only the Central Coast Section currently plays an open division and under the new proposal, would be able to advance a team that didn't win the title in another division.

This is great news for DivisionI North Coast Section teams that have lost 22 straight years to De La Salle-Concord. If the section implements an open division, large, ranked squads like Pittsburg, San Ramon Valley-Danville and California-San Ramon will have a better shot at a state crown.

Welcome to California! And they wonder why our state is in bankruptcy. It is ideas such as these that get thrust upon society and we are then forced to accept them. In theory it sounds great because no school is left behind. Competitive Equality = Garbage! Garbage in is Garbage out. This mentality is ruining sports as I have come to know it. It's the "No Child Left Behind" policy. Let me ask you how does that work in our education system? Not very good. I've said it before and many agree with me the every child gets a trophy, the every kid is deserving of equal opportunity is a false proposition. It's a dog eat dog world we live in. We are setting up our kids and future kids for failure. You might ask why? If you start making them believe that all they have to do is go to X school to win a championship, they will do so. They will move into that school to win the championship. Winning championships should be HARD. All that blood, sweat and tears should be EARNED. Not given by a Federation. Particularly a Federation that It shouldn't be this easy.

So because a school has lost 22 straight times to another school, this is why this idea is birthed and is pushing forward. Your schools lost because they earned a loss. This belief is that we will always be defeated by De La Salle but we can change the entire state section so we can earn a state championship. North Coast needs to get a spine!

I think a perfect scenario is one where all the section winners get a shot but let's not crown 13 state champions. That is a preposterous idea. Denny Green is saying, "You Wanna Crown Em. Crown their a**es!" You're raising up entitlement society 101! Championships are supposed to be hard. Trophies are supposed to be earned. Let's keep it this way.

I agree with a lot of which h is said. However small schools here in the valley often find themselves at disadvantage they can win their division and still never draw a pick. The computer rankings put them at an e, tremendous disadvantage to even try. The only thing to do is know at least two years ahead that you will have a competitive program so that you can set your pre season schedule really high. I will use Liberty as an example. What is the chance they have to being selected. .......none. at 595 enrollment we fall in with Hanford as a state competition.  If we have to play them to get there fine however er because they do not ever come up on our schedule we will not even have a chance. These type of situation have the need for something new. At the D1 level the opportunity to draw the game is better.

Maybe, just maybe, we, the general public, the tax payers of this state. We will demand the oversight of the C.I.F. and it's centuries old practices. No oversight, no transparency of it's actions and no accountability to the general public. Again you will disapprove, complain with very valid reasons and yet, we wont push, we wont look for governmental help or investigation. You wont find a politician to raise hell and ask questions, instead, you will come here and complain and not do anything to change things.

Why is that ?

Not sure about how transparent the government of California is (not very the Legend assumes)..........but one thing is crystal clear........that play-off proposal is a major cluster fudge.  The Ant thinks it was written by the same committee that drafted "No Child Left Behind".........implemented the law that allows" undocumented immigrants to" have a drivers license..........and the moms that headed up the last youth league soccer awards banquet (which took 4 hours to call everyones name and hand out 650 trophies).  The Anthilllegend will make one statement about this nonsensical proposition...............here it goes.................what kind of people, sit around a table (I'm sure for hours or at least until all the donuts are woofed down)..........and develop a playoff system that goes from 5 to 13 state title games.........there are quite a few numbers between 5 and 13 (7 to be exact) so why stop at 13?............actually 15 state champions makes better sense..........the Southern section has two divisions of 8-man football (don't want to leave those football power houses out).

The Ant is going to propose this system.........no matter where your team finishes...........the state mails everyone a state championship medal.......to be awarded as you drink and eat your fruit punch and twinkles after your last game (everyone is a state champion).  There...........now we don't have to sit through a week (13 games) of state championship football on ESPN The "Ocho"!

California High School football is headed to January Madness (this is absurd).

The Anthilllegend is going to read the proposal one  more time.........very thoroughly.............and make sure Jerry Brown didn't sneak some pork into that document.

You talk all this nonsense. When will you and people like you step up and do something the kids can can rely on ?
When will people like you quit with the mouth service and actually do something, contact a state representative and ask questions, ask the real questions that will help the kids ? You all talk, but you all don't work to get answers, we need open dialect with the powers that be. Why must we, the tax payers, beg for answers, for someone to speak to us for answers we ask. Simple, tax payers have questions about the CIF, please address our questions, is that not something we don't have a right too ?

The kids rely on us, and we fail the kids, simple.

Maybe because football is just not that important at the end of the day. Do I really care whether a central valley team is a state champion? Nope! If Tulare won a state championship would I be proud? Sure! At the end of the day I want my state officials to work on the real problems that our state faces, not whether or not we have a state championship playoff system in high school football. Oh, and I actually have real issues I work on like teaching and helping my community overcome issues with hunger and poverty when I"m not on here talking nonsense.....and that's EXACTLY what it is......nonsense......have a great day, coach!  ;)

It's simple. As of right now this is a proposal. You asked for our thoughts or opinions on the matter. We gave them to you. There are people on this site who do stick their neck out. But most of us are every day work a day people that don't really have the where with all to attempt to seek out these answers to get things changed and even if we did most often we are told this is how it is. Status quo! How about instead of you pointing the finger at us because you are new on here, you start with pointing the finger at yourself. What do you propose we do? Do you honestly think the CIF will listen to tiny Central Section about this. Took several years to even get a representative. Now they want to go way the other way. And it's one extreme to the next grasping for answers. You want to get the government involved? Bad idea. The government is more interested in developing a crap common core and figuring out ADA and what days to go to school and what days not to go to school. The illegal immigrants, specifically the latinos are running are education system. The determine what days school is in session and what days they aren't. You think a CIF football issue is more important? Once upon a time when Wasco got shafted 2 years ago for a State Bowl bid, one Rudy Salas got involved. Guess what happened? ZIP, ZILCH, NADA! Yeah get your local representatives involved. They have deeper fish to fry and elections to try and win. They could care less about a CIF issue.

Niner.....here is why the Anthilllegend ain't calling Jerry Brown........or writing Boxer or Fienstein.  The Legend has never thought twice about the number of state title games...........but now that you brought the subject up........ the Ant is sure he is against 13!!!!!!  And, the Anthillegend has done "some things"..........for kids.........it's hard to coach for 28 years and not do something for someone..... not including the interaction with thousands of kids (15 years) on a daily basis as a teacher (although the Legend is not exactly sure how or how many students he helped).  Better way of putting it is.......the Ant ain't taking credit for their accomplishments..........what they earned........they earned themselves............not cause they played for the Anthilllegend or had him as an instructor.  One thing the Ant knows for sure...........no kid ever asked me to lobby for 8 more state championship games........so don't feel the need to get all political on their behalf.  The only question the Anthill's has is why so damn many state champions are needed?  Probably won't make any calls to Sacramento about it.........nor will the Ant  be starting a letter writing campaign for all the little children who will never get a chance to jog into Bulldog Stadium.

"We need an open dialect with the powers to be".........just like those "town home meetings"............with Chrichlow you guys were calling for.  What did it get you........one of the worse transfer rules ever written...........no one still knows the parameters of that one.......other than it's open season for transferring in the section. Oh..they still block the ones they want to block...........and approve the ones headed to Washington Union!

On commitment and stepping up for kids (the Anthill love this subject).

The Anthill stepped up for kids 28 times.........each year...... after he committed he coached as hard as he could until the commitment was fulfilled.  The ones the Anthill questions are those who commit and then quit before the season even starts...........that's not the right thing to do for kids. Just a reference on commitment!

Anyone else want to question the Anthills commitment. Probably not.......

OK fellas, I get where you are coming from.

If you and I don't express your feelings, ideas, complaints to someone, why do we even speak our minds here? Why raise questions, why ask for transparency in what they, the CIF say ? Why is the C.I.F, above any questioning, any overview, answer me this and I will stop my questioning of this subject. Shouldn't you have the right to ask why?  Why, the rubber stamp, year after year, no questions, no transparency, no questions answered. Come on fellas, man up, ask whats going on. You pay for these clowns to do the right thing for the kids. And yes, this about our kids, our future. Should you not have the right to ask questions ? That's not entirely accurate.....Texas has multiple divisions and crowned 10 champions in 2013 (12 if you count the two 6-man champs).

That's why I'm a little confused that so many are against this plan......I'm pretty sure CA has a LOT more high schools than Texas (I could be wrong) so having a couple more divisions only makes sense.......

BIG SKIN

Here's my take on the whole thing.....
Whats does a "Title" mean? ....In 3-5 seasons the only people who remember are the kids(and glory days dads)....it's not a "PAY DAY" for them. It doesn't up their stock like a college bowl game. And adding these games means more expense of our tax dollars(transportation...staff..etc...etc..) It also extends a long season on KIDS bodies. If "It's all about the kids" then shouldn't we be more worried that their beat up bodies from a long season get pushed harder and further for a state title? Look how the injury rate goes up as we go deeper in the season. These injuries CAN impact possible college futures.
High School football is NOT SUPPOSED TO BE like the pro's or BCS.....they are STUDENT ATHLETES....PERIOD. Not pro's...not huge money making machines(NCAA).....they are kids...playing a simple sport....for the pride in their community...themselves...and their brothers in battle. My son plays for the love of the game....WIN OR LOSE.

The Anthilllegend

It actually sounds a lot like what they do in Texas, considered the greatest football state championship system in the country...

There are roughly 1.7 million students in high school in California and 1.5 million in Texas.

I do think we would need to cut our divisions to 8 teams so that we don't have teams with 14 games going on to play another 3-4 games in the state playoff.

Don't kid yourselves... this proposal sniffs of money making opportunities at the kids expense. Be proactive and schedule meetings??? Honestly, I think that is great, But, I have one question, isn't that what the advisory committees are for? I am on 3 of them and RARELY, I mean RARELY, do they follow OUR unanimous proposals and guidelines, we are more of a rubber stamp committee.

This proposal will happen if it shows more revenue, swimming has added a state championship, Baseball is looking at it...... ITS BIGGER BETTER  and MORE MONEY. PERIOD.

The can of worms has been opened and it will never close.

The Board of Manager meetings are open to the public.  Everything's actually pretty transparent, and most of it is on the website.  I don't think I've ever seen anyone in the public other than press show up.

And it's pretty much run as a standard democratic board, similar to any school board.  All the schools have a say through their leagues.

But I won't let facts get in anybody's way.

One thing I will recommend is to change Hurd's name from NINE to "4DKIDS" that way he wont have to type it four hundred times in all his posts.  Just sayin'.

Nice try but this proposal will never fly. John Bosco played 16 games last year on it's way to the open championship win. this would add an additional two games and maybe three if there is a play-in game like the Valley has. Way to many games for young kids. Nice try but this will never happen.

I couldn't care less about the number of games.  I also never worried about who got in or not.  Your team has no control over who they choose to get in and that is why they have been called the "Bowl Games".  Our focus is and always will be to win our last game (section championship).  In fact the first few years they had them, playoff teams had to fill out a form saying they would play in the game if chosen.  We declined.  Probably enjoyed the old "Cal-Hi Sports" state champions better as those guys knew HS football.

The real issue is the term competitive equity.  Punish the smaller schools that work their ass off, have a plan, compete year round, have administration and community support.  reward the schools that continually lose.  How pissed will a smaller valley school be when they earn the right to play in one of these games and end up playing a school with 3,4,5 times as many students who happens to have some superior athletes that year.

Competetive equity can be part of the equation, but similar schools should play each other.

fixed, but other than that....spot on

I've said it before.... It is one thing to make these decisions based on some point system or some bracketology science. We all know we'll never get it right with things like this or what some computer is telling us. It's a flawed system to begin with. But it is another thing when these systems or computers are rewarding & punishing teams from not just the prior year. But prior years. Are you kidding? So because X school did something in 2011, that should not affect where they are placed in 2014. It is not the NOW so it isn't as accurate as should be. In the CIF example... They say well if you achieved success 2-3 years ago, then it's time to move on up. When the reality is that prior year or years aren't an accurate representation of the school in present day, current year. The small schools, private or not has talent but it ebs and flows. It is not consistent. So all those years that Garces was kicking butt and had superior talent at the lower levels D4, D3, and D2, they payed for it by being placed in D1 and the SWYL. Kingsburg and Dinuba, the same thing. Ridgeview should be in D1 and it is a shame they won't be because they can compete just fine in this division. But it all goes back to too many divisions. If you made less divisions, chances are you'd see the best D2 schools play the best D1 schools every year. And the best D3 schools play the best D4 schools. And it would be even more competitive and even better. You wouldn't have to wonder could the West High Vikings led by Ryan Matthews have beaten the BHS Drillers led by Phillip Thomas.

The mixed leagues might present an even bigger problem than the so called "too many divisions" argument.  I think we need football only leagues.  I'm just fine with how divisions are put together, but once the divisions are set for each cycle, the leagues need to be created based on geography and divisions.  No leagues like the WYL with teams playing in 4 different divisions.

I've got an idea! Let's make a NINE team EYL with teams all the way from D1 to D6!! Oh, wait, they already did that, huh? Nevermind........ ;)

At least the CIF came to their senses and corrected that......
