Choice A: Resume
Won a CIF Championship in Early 2000's (with 2 future NFL players, 1 QB and 1 RB)
Coached pop warner and elementary football the for 10 years (roughly 2002 to 2012). While being an award nominated teacher and admin
Coached the last 2 years (2013 and 2014) at a school in SoCal and went 3-17 and had to forfeit games because of paper work eligibility
Has never coached in this section or coached against a team in this section

Choice B: Resume
Has never been a Head Coach
Has been an assistant in the same D1 central section program for 10 years.
Helped build this program from ground up all the way to a Valley Champion.
Has been a Varsity O-Line (3 years), D-Line (4 years), JV HC (1 year) and Varsity DC (2 years)
Has coached against the teams that you will need to beat to win a Valley Championship
Coaches in same District, so he knows how the district works and what he needs to build a championship program and what the district is willing to do to help him.

Who would you hire????

sounds like option B is a coach in the CUSD. The way things have been shaping up I don't believe a coach's resume is as important as how he meshes with the philosophy of the admin that is hiring him and will he kiss their rumps

biggplay11

Different district Teddy, but who would TeddyKGB hire between those 2 candidates?

TeddyKGB

bigplay, I think the to hire a coah the discriptions are still not enough to choose. I'd ask from Choice A: what division was the CIF title in? Are the school he was a coach at in the SS and the one in question similar in demographics?

It seems obvious that Choice B is whom you would want and you make a stronger case for, I would agree with you because he seems familiar with the school, kids, admin, program.

biggplay11

CIF championship was with D2 I believe, and Alex Smith was the QB & Reggie Bush was the RB. The SS school he was 3-17 is the exact opposite demographics as the school hiring.

You are correct I would choose resume B without a doubt.

Resume A is the safe choice, but I don't always think the safe choice is the correct choice.

And I think your 1000% correct about your comment with meshing with admin!

TeddyKGB

another question comes to mind, what was his record besides that Championship season? I'm not sure I call Choice A the safe choice, both bring good qualities to the table. I feel that the biggest factor is the demographics that the guy has coached in and how he will get along withthe admin, boosters/parenst.  Choice A, will his philosophy fit into the new school's admin "vision" of how the football program should progress? Same really goes for choice B, it's totally different being the HC and running the program than it is to be an assistant.

I have a bias about hiring people from the area.

And a lot of top collegiate programs share that bias with me

Just my opinion, but my opinion is right

Coach Arax is going to be upset...
That does appear to be the resume of one of the Bullard assistants. However, I doubt Arax would be upset. Maybe disappointed that his staff is losing a heck of a coach. But more than that I'm sure he would be extremely proud that this coach has worked his way into a head coaching gig and would support him in building that program (except if/when the programs play each other).
