Got this earlier today....  Amazing man with amazing vision...

Dear SCrubjay,

Word is spreading quickly today about some very sad news.  We learned this morning that Floyd "Doc" Buchanan passed away in his sleep.  With Doc's passing the world lost a visionary genius.  Clovis Unified School District is the living legacy of Doc's passion and vision for great education; and every student, teacher, administrator and community member who has benefitted from being a part of Clovis Unified has benefitted from Doc's greatness.

Defined by statements like: "A fair break for every kid." "It's people not programs that make the positive difference for students." and "We believe in high standards in Clovis schools." Clovis Unified's culture and core values were formed by Doc Buchanan.  As we prepare to start Clovis Unified's 56th school year, the news of Doc's passing is especially poignant.  Earlier this year we had selected a theme for this school: "Making a Difference!"  Doc exemplified that theme in a way that few others could accomplish, and today our entire leadership team recommitted ourselves to carrying on Doc's legacy to make the positive difference for our students now and far into the future.  Doc's motto, "Sic 'em" will live on in Clovis Unified!

Sincerely,
Janet Young, Ed.D.
Superintendent

Great article in the Fresno Bee about a great man.  Quotes:  "Life is a contest and the sooner young people realize that the better off they will be." and "Compete in everything we do."  It is sad that many smaller school districts don't follow his philosophy.

Nothing was lost on him.... even little things like Clovis Unified campuses have never been locked and never will be... Doc believed the campuses belonged to the community... they paid for them and they should benefit from them.... you drive by any high school campus in the morning or evening and you will see people playing tennis, shooting hoops, using the tracks..

Sadly, Fresno, a community that needs access to those resources more than Clovis, keeps their campuses in lock-down..... ridiculously short sighted.

Scrub, I would think that the people in Clovis (before Kenny and his brood moved in) would not vandalize the Campus like it would happen in some areas of Fresno

hard to say... I think initially you would be correct, but if the public takes "ownership" and see it as theirs, long term vandalism probably wouldn't be any worse than what happens now with the worst elements of the community hopping the fences....

I think the bigger issue would be the homeless.

Are you saying that Veteran's Stadium or Lamonica Field is open all the time or just the other tracks and sports areas on the campus?  I would drive to do my morning jog on the track at Buchannan.

Technically stadiums are closed to the public.  That being said, there are always adults using the track and running the stairs at Buchanan and Lamonica.  District looks the other way but officially doesnt condone it due to potential liability.
