This will be an interesting team to watch this year. This could be the year they finally break the "new school, new team, no size slump & win a few games. They still are fighting the low numbers turn out. They have lost several games in the past they should have won but simply ran out of gas in the
4th quarter. They finally have some size. As I said, this little school will be interesting to watch this year. Their game with Sierra on the 4th, win or lose, will be a good yardstick as Sierra always comes ready to play.

To list a few players:

6 foot-4, 200 pound senior running back/reciever Mason Ellis

6 foot-6, 222 pounds junior end/backup QB Grant Denny

Anchoring the offensive will be Ben Mollet, 6-foot-2, 250 pounds, Logan Christian, 6-foot-4, 230 pounds, and Jared Varner, 6-foot-4, 250 pounds.

All that size and still running the fly offense? Use that beef and quit wasting it trying to get to the edge.

laidback, are those OL guys fatbodies or are they athletic? 250lbs of blubber isnt much good, just look at Kenny's sister-mom

C'mon Coach G... have you ever watched a good fly team gut someone straight up the middle?  The Fly Sweep is only a distraction for the real action.

To tell the truth, I really don't know. I do know they did a lot of off season strength training. Like I said, I think the Sierra game will tell the complete story, win or lose.

The jet sweep in the fly offense is like the buck sweep in the wing-T; it's the "base play" to set up what you really want to run.  The threat at the edge freezes defenders for trap and iso.

Unless the fly dude's fast as heck, in which case you give him the ball until they stop it.

Report

Minarets is starting to lose it's edge as far as number of athlete's going to the school. Things will begin to swing back to Yosemite, this, according to both A.D.'s.

I think the way it will eventually play out is, the jocks who want a normal high school experience will want to go to Yosemite & the ones that want an excellent, hi tech education will go to Minarets. That being said, the parents will have a lot of say in who goes where. Minarets is very committed to seeing to it that the youth of today are ready to go out & do well in this new hi tech world that us old timers never experienced. The two schools are extremely different animals. The numbers for each school will cycle up & down over the years & academics will determine that cycle, not athletics. That's just the way it is. I have heard some nasty comments over the last 4 or 5 years from Yosemite parents ranting about the number of students Minarets has pulled from Yosemite. 90% of those parents are the parent of an athlete. Let me ask you parent, would you rather have a powerhouse football team with your student sitting in a classroom of 40 students to a teacher or 25 students to a teacher. Personally I would rather have my son in a class of 25 or so students learning something rather than him playing for a powerhouse FB team. The one thing Coach Hurd used to say that I agreed with is, "what's best for the kids". For me, as much as I love high school FB & loved watching my son play, academics came first. So, for all you parents bitching about numbers, suck it up & see that your child goes to the school best suited for them, that will give them the best education & let FB fall wherever it will. I am so sick & tired of this numbers thing. People it's about education, not athletics. I know, I know, athletics gets kids in to a school they normally would not get in, but what are the percentages? .01%, maybe. OK, that's my rant for the day.

Minarets did not look good at Friday's scrimmage. Oh well, another tough year for the Mustangs.

Well guys (& gals), this shows how little I know about HS football. I think I will just keep my mouth shut for the rest of the season & enjoy whatever happens. Honestly, I did not think Minarets would win this game. Good job Mustangs.

With no feeder program (pop warner) anymore, I think they only have a couple years left.  Kids will go back up the hill to Yosemite and stay. Just my opinion.

What happened to their pop warner program? I thought their pop warner was very good?

It folded.
The main drivers' kids may have aged out and there wasnt enough tradition and commitment to Mustang football to inspire other families/individuals into taking on the challenge. Similar thing happened to another program (cough cough) in that youth league, CVYFL, a few years ago.

Compare that to Caruthers, where the whole town bleeds Raider blue and multiple generations have gone through the youth and hs programs, due in large part to the commitment of local coaching icons like Casanova and other respected individuals like Darren Gilmore.

Ok Laidback, Let's look at the academic numbers from the Smarter Balanced Assessments Test for the 2014-2015 school year from caaspp.cde.ca.gov

English Language Arts Standard- Met or Exceeded
Yosemite- 63%
Minarets- 34%
Chawanakee Academy- 35%

English Standard Not Met
Yosemite- 8%
Minarets- 27%
Chawanakee Academy- 14%

Math Standard Met or Exceeded
Yosemite- 25%
Minarets- 8%
Chawanakee Academy- 14%

Math Standards Not Met
Yosemite- 47%
Minarets- 76%
Chawanakee Academy- 79%

So, based on these FACTS- " the ones that want an excellent, hi tech education will go to Minarets." These parents might want to rethink their choice for an "excellent" education.

Boy have I been down this road before. We could debate this forever still not agree. I am not talking about this testing crap standards that California & unfortunately a lot of other states do. Most schools teach to pass the test not to learn. I am talking getting a real education & preparing them for college. Before I go any further, I want to state that my son got a very good education at Yosemite High, graduated from college & is close to completing his masters degree. I say that because I want you to understand I have no issues with or bias against Yosemite, I just feel that Minarets does a great job of preparing the student for college & the real world.

I can post stats that support me & you can support stats that support you. I am not going to get into a pissing contest. I was not bad mouthing YHS. YHS is not  hi tech school, but a traditional one & that was all I was saying. I am saying that Minarets does a little bit better at prepping students for college. Note numbers in red.

This was from a U.S. News & World Report Magazine article. I wish I had  the web site, but don't remember it.

When you dig a little deeper this number just refers to how many take AP tests and pass.  At Minerates it 38% of students participate in AP with a 33% pass rate of the test.  Yosemite recieves a lower score because of participation rate which is 17% but they have a 56% pass rate.  To throw Liberty just down has a college readiness score of 27.9 with 51% participation and of those 40% pass rate.  So frankly I think it is the participation in AP classes that pushes the score.

YHS has more students in International Baccalaureate program than in the AP program.

Interesting article

" In countries with higher numbers of students who frequently browse the Internet for schoolwork at school, reading performance tends to improve more sluggishly than in others, or even to worsen.

The OECD study found that the use of computers was negatively correlated with improvements in student performance on math tests.
